Happy
Monday!
I
was not able to get to my classroom today due to the floors being waxed, so I
had some extra time on my hands. In
honor of #makeitmonday, I decided to do a bit of crafting! My reading corner was starting to come
together (teal and white chevron rug, crate seats, etc.), but the walls were
looking a little bare. I went to Joann’s
(one of the best stores on earth!) just to peruse. I ended up finding the perfect thing to put
on the wall:
These
letters stand 12 inches tall – there are so many possibilities! I decided to spell out the word that makes
the most sense for a reading corner: READ.
The
letters clearly needed to be jazzed up a bit, so I decided to paint and
decoupage them with cute scrapbook paper.
I picked out a scrapbook paper stack that had some teal paper to match
the teal theme that I apparently have going on.
Next I picked out a teal base paint.
I
painted the front and sides of each letter.
Since I only wanted to decoupage the front, I did not want the sides to be
bare. I did two coats to make sure that
the letters were completely covered.
After
the letters were dry, I flipped each letter onto a piece of scrapbook paper and
traced its outline.
Next,
I cut out the letter from the paper.
The
decoupage part of this project was a bit trickier than I thought – bubbly paper
= evil. After trial and error, I finally
found a method that worked well for me.
I put a good layer (not too thin, not too thick) of Mod Podge on the
letter. I tried to make the layer as
smooth as possible. Next, I put the
paper on the letter, straightened it, and smoothed it out. Then, I let it dry completely (15-20
minutes). Finally, I put a layer of Mod
Podge on top of the paper. Again, I
tried to make the Mod Podge as smooth as possible. I also put Mod Podge on the sides of letter
because I wanted them to be smooth and shiny as well!
The
end result was pretty awesome! They will
look so good in the reading corner (pictures to come)!
